Mihara (Muromachi): The Mihara school is divided into three periods: Ko-Mihara (approx. 1278–1394), Chu-Mihara (approx. 1395–1429), and Sue-Mihara (approx. 1430–1570). The NBTHK uses the terms Ko-Mihara and Sue-Mihara for chronological classification. Swords from the Chu-Mihara period are designated simply as "Mihara" by the NBTHK, as is the sword presented here.
The Mihara smiths originally came from Bizen but forged exclusively in the Yamato tradition while in Bingo. Starting with the school's founder, Masaie, all smiths used "Masa" as the first syllable of their smithing names.
The old saya features a magnificent lacquer technique. Gold leaf is applied over a textured base, followed by a layer of translucent red lacquer. The effect is spectacular.
